Academic Developments

In 1989, Bethel College offered four degrees, three undergraduate degrees, and one graduate degree.46 There were thirty-four majors offered at the baccalaureate level, fifteen associate-level majors, and one graduate-level major. The faculty consisted of 37 full-time and 27 part-time professors in six undergraduate divisions and one graduate division. The library contained 65,536 volumes.47 By 2004, the college offered nine degrees: five undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees.48 That year, the college had forty-one undergraduate majors, sixteen associate majors, and four graduate majors. The 2004 faculty included 74 full-time and 102 part-time professors in ten undergraduate divisions and one graduate studies division. The library holdings had grown to 108,106 volumes.49

During the years of Norman Bridges’s presidency, the college experienced unprecedented academic growth. Under the leadership of academic dean and vice-president for academic affairs Michael Holtgren, several programs were added, expanded, and revised. A comparison of students by majors between 1989 and 2004 shows specifically where Bethel was experiencing the greatest growth.50
